What you choose to bring on a walk can make the difference between a brilliant day in the hills and a miserable trudge. Below is a list of recommended kit to help keep you safe, comfortable and happy when you’re out and about.

☐ Comfortable walking boots or sturdy trail shoes

☐ Walking socks

☐ Moisture-wicking base layer

☐ Fleece or warm mid-layer

☐ Comfortable walking trousers or shorts

☐ Waterproof jacket

☐ Waterproof overtrousers

☐ Fully charged phone (and perhaps a small power bank, depending on your phone’s battery life)

☐ Map — either digital or a physical map with a compass

☐ Water and snacks or lunch

☐ Small basic first-aid kit — even just blister plasters and basic pain relief

☐ Any personal medication you need

☐ Warm hat and gloves

☐ Small torch or headtorch

☐ Walking poles, if needed

☐ Daypack big enough to carry the essentials (around 20–30L)

In the end, a kit list is a really personal thing, and what you choose to carry will always change depending on the route, weather, conditions and time of year. Think of this as a starting point rather than a strict checklist.

The aim isn’t to carry everything you could possibly need, but to make sure you’re prepared for the conditions you’re heading into. Check the weather, consider your route and adjust your kit accordingly. With the basics covered, you can spend less time worrying about what you’ve forgotten and more time enjoying the journey!
